Cicada Swarm

Cicada Swarm depicts swarms of insects, which have been painted from locally collected specimens. The work makes use of intensely layered swarms, arranged to suggest facial features, which emerge and recede through layers of acrylic paint. This painting references the optical effects of camouflage, and the interaction between representational and abstract forms. It also references masking; obscuring the face through layers whilst simultaneously revealing new forms. The masking of the face represents a becoming, or an in between space where change, or anthropomorphism is taking place.
